Reading this heartbreaking story of family separation brings back the trauma my family experienced in 2002. We brought my husband to the INS, as it was known back then, excited about him getting his permanent resident Visa. Instead, they took him into custody. I drove around with our four year-old daughter frantic trying to find out where the government had kidnapped my husband to. He ended up in the Wackenhut for-profit facility for 5 1/2 months while we fought his expedited removal. We filed for his visa before 9/11 and his appointment came up afterwards when the laws had changed. Our amendment rights were taken away and DHS and the Patriot Act were formed. Rather than what our four year-old daughter grow up without her father, we made the painful decision to move down to the El Paso/Cd. Juárez Border at the peak of the cartel violence. For 17 1/2 years I got up at 3 A.M. to cross the Córdova Bridge to get our daughter to school and me to work. After our LA based attorneys offered to sue the government pro bono and I agreed to pay the filing fees, my husband got his residency. He is now a naturalized citizen and has his own LLC business. Every time I see your family being separated, I feel a deep pain in my soul. We have to remove this racist regime from power and get back to a country where immigrants are welcome again.
