Olivia I’ve found myself becoming more and more despondent. Every day brings a fresh hell. Our substack community gives me hope, so many thoughtful smart people doing their best, but I fear just preaching to the choir. Rachel’s devastating report last night on cancer research being actively undermined was personally crushing to me. I have to hold hope and faith that we will come out the other side but this is so scary. Thank you for all you do. 🌺🌷💐

There’s an even better way to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. We need an ICE Sadie Hawkins day where the roles are reversed on who gets to do the asking.

That’s when fully documented immigrants get to walk up to ICE agents and demand to see their passports or birth certificates.

And when they can’t produce them on the spot, they are taken to an undisclosed location without their communications equipment.

After three weeks, they’ll get to shower and perhaps get let out.

As they say, turnabout is fair play. This would be more than fair, it would be justice.

I love the turnabout is fair play idea. Speaking of dance partners and dances, the people who are taken are probably enslaved and building the ballroom.

Fly the ICE agents to Tierra del Fuego and leave them.

I 💜 Mexico so much. Its people have shown me only grace and kindness. And good natured fun.

I wish I could assure the same for them.

I would caution Trump and his administration against taking military action against Mexico. The Mexicans will not take it lying down, they will not buy a load of bitcoin or let Trump build a hotel. Mexico is a well-armed nation of over 100 million. I suspect they already have developed plans for dealing with US military incursions.

And .... How many Mexicans and Mexican Americans are resident inside the States!? They won't go for this!

The ones I know, old friends who should be settled into mellow old age, are furious. If they are riled, how do you think the young people are?

We have become Somali pirates.

Lionel:

The 18th-century pirates of the Caribbean were not pretending to defend their homeland. They were just rapacious pirates, with an undisguised profit motive. The 21st-century Somali pirates, likewise. Dangerous and unprincipled all, but not hypocrites!

Our formerly honorable Navy is now no more than cold-blooded murderers . . . we kill because we can! Who is going to stop us?

Vincent, I fully agree. I am a former Army Officer, a Bn Recon Plt Leader in Vietnam, Ranger qualified, Special Forces qualified, and now so disheartened that waking up in the morning is a struggle. But I continue to fight. Too bloody old for it, for sure, but if we don't fight, who will?

As an aside, I did one tactical beach infiltration off a diesel sub in Ranger School. I never want to go into one of those cold, cramped tubes again!

The WH likes to complain about countries where drugs come in from. Maybe instead of putting the blame on places of manufacturing, start placing some blame on this country for creating the market. Someone can bring in anything they want but if we don't have a viable market for the sales, it won't be productive. Here's what I know about crossing borders (I've crossed them in cars and planes): The country that you are ENTERING bears the responsible for the search and seizure. When you leave a country, no one is checking your gear but when you ENTER a country, that country (in this case the U.S., because we are the ones claiming that the dr*gs are coming into here) is responsible for searching. I've also seen those documentaries were small planes fly back and forth carrying dr*gs. What do our laws allow? We have got some real moral credibility problems taking out boats in international waters. IF we knew that dr*gs were on the boats for sure, WHY are we boarding them to search? Is it because it's illegal? Well if that's illegal, I'm pretty sure just accusing and taking out boats full of people (from countries "we" don't like) is even more illegal. Instead of trained military flooding our streets due to imagined crises, why isn't there a plan to use them more professionally in line with what they are trained to do? (Yes, these are rhetorical questions- we all know the answers already. :( )

Well Olivia, it's not about drugs. So, why? I have a strong suspicion that the answer lies with Stephen Miller more than Donald Trump. Trump seems to be stumbling through this craziness while Miller seems confident and joyous. Trump is crazy and old. Miller is clearly a lunatic.

Happy Independence Day to a country I love, one who fought a long battle (1810-1821) to free themselves from the Spanish Empire. The culture and people are beautiful and the food is delectable. If anyone ever has the opportunity to see their Ballet Folklorico, it is a enjoyable way to learn the diverse culture and rich history of Mexico. :)

These illegal strikes against alleged drug cartels are no more about drugs than the GOP aftermath of the Kirk assassination was about peacemaking or making nice. Both are about the weaponization of all thinks domestic and international by Trump and company for no other purposes than consolidating executive power and the establishment of a police state. Here's my related commentary in Raw Story from earlier today, "How Trump is making America politically violent again: https://www.rawstory.com/raw-investigates/how-donald-trump-is-making-america-politically-violent-again/
