Respectfully, I don't ever want anyone in the US to fight like Republicans do, or have done over the decades that have brought us to this moment. I wish DEMS would work more to their strengths - leveraging the varied achievements and tireless efforts of individual leaders (Jamie Raskin, Chris Murphy, Melanie Stansbury, Andy Beshear, James Talarico, and many others, including younger leaders and former Republican voices like yours) around the country - focusing on shared values but not MAGA-esque group think (which I'm sure is not what you meant). How to translate that into massive voter turnout and rejection of the trump regime, I'm not sure, but I'm glad you've joined the fight as a candidate.
As a 23-year Army veteran, I tell everyone telling me "thanks for your service" this weekend to save that for Veterans Day. This is for those who gave their lives. I'm somehow still alive.
Plus, this Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day are going to be somber, worrisome events with that miscreant of a man as President.
And...Billie Jean King has always been a "piece of work"! Congratulations have always been in order for thst woman.
That mountain shrine should never be dismantled or disrupted! Screw the wall. Ow Miller wants to get people out who got in legally? These people are just hypocrites and racists. As far as the voting shenanigans, it is probably best to vote in person to know your vote is going to count. If you did not vote in a primary, you should make sure that you are registered and information is correct before November.
I follow news sources closely and only through you did I learn about the suit against the Catholic Church. Obviously this administration does not believe that anything is sacred. Thank you for exposing this.
Every week the Trump administration does something that makes me say “How is this legal?”. We really need someone to stick Trump and Miller in a cell and throw away the key.
It seems not likely that Donald Trump will ever be sentenced to serve time in prison, as he "richly" deserves. Maybe the best we can hope for is ⚰️. (DJT will pass away, one blessed day – preferably, by/of natural causes, of course.)
These are meaty and serious stories, Olivia--all of them. While each is an individual situation, I can't help but think of the Celtic knot that I think ties them all together.
I believe the regimes actions: from DOGE to the Iran War (and EVERYTHING) in between are being done partly (or wholly) to help trump consolidate power. It seems to me the whole point, since last January, has been to sow chaos and division: economically, socially and medically. Remember the mantra "I alone can fix it."? Well, I think he's trying to "fix it" for himself, forever. Plunder our Country, its resources and its wealth for the trump crime family and the oligarchs happy to go along to get along.
All these stories can be threaded with that needle. I think the Dems need to be able to articulate that, and explain how, by bringing us together, they can work FOR rural, suburban and urban Americans. I think Kamala really did have a similar vision but didn't articulate it in a way that people understood it. I don't see that as Democrat or Republican; I see it as American values. I hope others will see it that way too.
In Washington state we vote by mail, I am very concerned about this “ham-handed” attempt to prevent voting by mail. The states control voting, not the Feds. I hope the courts get involved quickly to block this nonsense.
As Democrats hammer Felon Trump and this horrific administration, they must also have a positive message. They must explain what they will do. I suggest they start with a "gas credit card" for low income workers that helps pay for gas to get to work. I also suggest a substantial child care subsidy and an increased subsidy to help pay for heath insurance coverage premiums. They might also resurrect "equal pay for equal work".
There’s a famous saying that generals always prepare to fight the last war. Apparently the Democratic party and many of its candidates do too. There may be some lessons from the ‘24 election but the landscape has shifted while too many “strategists” and campaign advisors want to do what they’ve always done to rake in the money.
I’d change my registration to Independent except where I live the primary pretty much determines the winner.
My fear, which you describe well, is that Dems will blow a golden opportunity through unwillingness to listen to new voices. Deeply entrenched Dem leadership is very jealous of their position and fearful of losing it.

One & only one thing is sacred to the MAGA faithful: the golden orange, graven image of their dear leader — oh-so-Christlike, King Donald the Wurst.
Thank you Olivia 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Agreed! I always learn something too. The Billie Jean King story is the cherry on the cake this week. I'll share it with my Mom. 🍒

Love your focus and perspective.

Another outstanding piece. I always learn something from you, and I enjoy learning! Thanks for the cafecito time! I look forward to it every week!
Thanks so much for your crystal clear explanations, Olivia.

Another terrific summary of the past week's Trump shenanigans. Thanks and have someone good Memorial Day weekend.

California's "open" primaries are a disaster. Each party must choose their candidate. Full stop.
Plus, we need "instant runoff" (ranked choice) voting on every ballot, everywhere.
Right on Olivia.

So enjoy the back page news stories, yet affecting you and I SO mich..Troye is so bright. 💡
