I LOVE what you are doing Olivia!! You are walking in the shoes of those most affected by this Administration. Your compassion and sanity are lacking in MAGA world.

Thank you for your kindness.

Thank you, Olivia, for being our ambassador of kindness.

I worry so much that the world isn’t separating normal Americans from the cruelness that is trump.

Me too.😕The world is definitely watching.

That spirit is alive in a lot of the country. Tomorrow night I am going to a Day of the Dead Party. And I am about as blue-eyed Anglo as you can get. I'm baking Pan de Muertos, of course.

I grew up in El Paso too! We still have land on the border that the government is ruining with their vehicles and traffic. We deserve to be a thriving border alliance! Please keep the focus on the border, it’s such a beautiful place.

Cynthia! Hello. And you are absolutely right.

Cynthia Timberlake Givans's avatar

Hi Annie! So great to see you here! Are you in EP?

Annie Hoy's avatar

Nope. I live in Oregon.

And most of my El Paso relatives are dead. I'm holding down the Hoy name out here. And how did the Givans get in your name?

I was in San Francisco and Santa Cruz the last 30 years, fell in love and am now married to Charlie Givans and living in Leesburg VA outside DC.

I covered Oregon when living out there, love it!

Where in Oregon do you live now?

I love the Pink Store and going to Palomas! A group of my friends are going there next week to shop and enjoy the food and the margaritas. We're treated like family when we go there. Thank you so much for doing this series.

One of the first acts of treason Donald Trump committed in his first term after his disgusting Muslim ban was to defund and destabilize the Northern Triangle of Central American countries of US aid in order to flood Mexico and then ultimately the US with fleeing migrants he then can claim were “caravans” invading the US. He then threatened every Republican in Congress and the Senate to not vote for the bi-partisan border bill that was just negotiated that would have helped solved this immigrant crisis and then used this against Biden and said it was all his fault.

This is fascism, but nothing was done to remove him from office then.

Some of us have not forgotten.

Palomas! One of my favorite places. I live not far from Columbus/Palomas and it is my happy place STILL. They have fabulous American trained dentists, numerous optical shops and can set you up with prescription eyeglasses in 2 hours or less. The bifocal I ordered cost $90.00. Way less than any place in US. Great pharmacies (wonderful for face creams) And of course the fabulous Pink Store. I am so glad you gave this part of the border publicity.

I’ve never been to a border town but the one you’re in looks beautiful. I would be in the Pink Place for hours. I love the hanging parrots. Thank you Olivia for showing me this.

Thanks for this Olivia, I will share with friends and social media.

Thank you, Olivia, for the personal tour. What a sweet town. Love the Pink Store!

The richness of cultural diversity in America distinguishes our country and makes it beautiful and unique. This land would be a dreary place (oh, so very beige) without a myriad of customs, languages, fashions, philosophies, and cuisines from around the globe. These are all attributes to be celebrated ~ and not to divide us, but to unite us.

This is wonderful! I lived in McAllen, then Edinburgh in ‘78-‘79, and traveled back and forth across the border for lunch, dinner, shopping very often. I loved it there! The people were so warm and lovely. I was the only Anglo who worked in the little gift shop where I was for awhile, and was there when it snowed for the first time in many of my coworkers’ lives.

How wonderful to share a lifetime first with my chicas!!!

I also worked for a fishing camp on Lake Guerrero, a couple of hours south of Brownsville. My dad and I spoke no Spanish and our crew spoke very little English. I was young and blonde and ignorant of local ways and there was much laughter and learning.

I think Tamaulipas, the exact roads that I traveled (sometimes alone) are now some of the most dangerous. Makes me so sad.

Anyway, thanks for the memories. I MISS THE FOOD!!!

Fresh produce everywhere, and the music. . . Take me with you next time! XO ~ Rae

My first name is Carmen. 🪇
