Flags should be at half staff for people like her.

One of the best pieces you've ever written. Jane has been my lifelong hero also. It started in childhood with the Nat Geo book, The Wild Chimpanzees, and never stopped. Her books, talks, and a few personal conversations with her at book signings continued to inspire me through life. Her wisdom just seemed to grow as did the people that she touched. A visit to Gombe a few years ago let me get a glimpse of the source of that wisdom. Her loss is profound but she has moved so many of us, that I have absolutely no doubt her legacy will stay rooted in this World as we carry on with the Hope that she inspired. Thank you, Olivia, for writing this wonderful tribute to the irreplaceable Jane.

My daughter and I were there! I feel so lucky to have been able to hear her talk in person about her incredible life and legacy

Beautiful tribute Olivia. I read her last book and it was a great read, full of wisdom. I remember watching so many PBS nature shows and National Geographic articles on Jane over the years and really admired her persistence and dedication to our "cousins". She will be missed.

This is a wonderful tribute to Jane Goodall, she was a wonderful woman and yes we NEED to learn from what she taught and what her charity did for so many for so long. Hopefully her legacy will live on into infamy. Thank you so much for giving us your background as well, I kind of thought you cared so much now I know.

Thank you, Olivia, for a moving assessment of Jane Goodall and her work with the chimps. She is my hero and I have followed her career via her books and documentaries and felt I knew all the chimps and shared her experiences. I had the fabulous experience of hearing her speak at West Chester University in PA and then meeting her afterwards and having her sign one of my books. It was a wonderful experience and listed as one of my lifetime favorites. She and her excellent philosophy re saving animals and our planet are something we should all know and adhere to. She accomplished so much in her lifetime. Thankfully we had her for so many years.

She touched my heart as well. Because she saw living beings who were so much like us.

Thanks so very much for honoring her today. She is a heroine imo. I loved her. Always will. It's good to read about the really great accomplishments that she had. When I was younger, I often wished that I could've worked with her. She was SUCH a dedicated and amazing woman. : ) Thanks again for posting this. It made my night.

Jane Goodall was what we all should strive to be: a courage monger to counter the fear and ignorance mongers. Thank you, Olivia, for your thoughtful and insightful essay.
