Something that continues to puzzle me: I do trust the observers who've spoken of Trump's "cognitive decline" in recent years, but from my distance it's not obvious at all. I've never been up on NYC affairs, so I didn't start paying serious attention to Trump till 2015. I *have* read plenty of accounts of his earlier career, including Mary Trump's first book. His speeches and public statements, especially the less-scripted ones, have usually seemed cut-and-pasted from assumptions and talking points with little coherent thought behind them. A capable actor could deliver them as if they made sense, but Trump is at best a mediocre actor. (Good actors get into the heads of the characters they're playing. Trump the narcissist is not capable of getting into anyone's head but his own.) So I wonder how much of what we see is the result of Trump's decline and how much due to the absence of competent handlers.
