When Dems get back into power (just go with me here) they should seize Musk's and Trump's assets and use them to rebuild our data privacy. Can't fathom what it would take to restore the ID's of 350M people, but something will have to be done.

Great column this morning, Olivia (even though the circumstances of the stories suck). Keep 'em coming! One of my favorite activities was walking along the beach in the early morning with my dogs. "No thunder, you didn't make the wave go away. See, it's coming back!" Hopefully you are having a well-deserved holiday weekend and downtime.

Always a relief, Olivia, to see you pop in on Substack. We know you might be the next to get grabbed. Presumably, you have prepared for that eventuality - I donated to your legal fund and will again, when asked.
While all this that's going on in what used to be our America, I realized that numbness helps. I could not exist in a 24/7 tizzy over the endless multiple daily travesties if I were not able to become numb to them. What that means is I can write cogents letters to senators and house reps without resorting to vulgarity, which I always winnowed to the "crank" file when reviewing was part of my work. I forward everything I subscribe to here to my BlueSky and restack here.
This might not seem like much, but I'm 77 and don't expect to last much longer. This is what I can do. Who knows - maybe this is keeping me from developing dementia.
So I support Gavin Newsom, Mark Elias, MTN, Legal AF, Aaron, Lev, Michael Cohen, Malcolm Vance, Oleksandr Bolbirer (Slava Ukraini, heroyam slava 💙💛) and many more who are capable of doing the work I support them to do.
But to do it rationally, I have had to develop a shell of protection. Everyone needs their own armour. Survival is foremost - and don't allow anyone to demand that you WAKE UP. It's damned rude and is as bad as being called stupid. We are awake and we are not stupid.
What I fail to understand about the data grab (which frankly, has terrified me from the start) and was my main point when contacting my reps is it is THEIR data and THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS' data too! I get that they (MAGA-Rep Congress) don't care one whit about their constituents and so they don't care what happens to our data, but they aren't even protecting their own interests or those of their own family members in this particular situation. I just don't get that. What am I missing?

They're scared! MAGA has created an environment of fear. They're scared of their own shadows because of the other crazy MAGAts.
