Thanks for being strong, brave and a voice of reason with great insights. Our country needs more people like you Olivia! and Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel and Charlie Sykes etc etc

You don't see the "..." to the right of your name above your comment? That opens a menu which includes an "Edit" item.

Fabulous post, btw. You're a clear thinker and capable writer. I've come to look forward to Saturday Morning Cofveve each week.

(Added: Thanks for not being afraid to speak out.)

Excellent recap of the Colbert Crisis.

Or as Colbert himself says to Carr:

“FCC You.”

Thank you Olivia. I have missed your courage and wisdom. Ironically my wife Jean and I first learned about you when you were featured on the 60 minutes show about the “mysterious illness” you and other government workers suffered before our government finally admitted that you all were intentionally targeted by a bad foreign actor.

Please stay safe although we know you will always speak out against the regime.

Thanks, Olivia, for the astute analysis of the Colbert situation. Just one comment:

"Historian Timothy Snyder warns against what he calls “obeying in advance”—the instinct institutions sometimes have to anticipate punishment and adjust themselves before they are formally compelled."

The same Timothy Snyder who immediately left the country as soon as Trump was elected. Too bad he wasn't able to follow his own counsel.

Thank goodness for the Stephen Colberts and Jimmy Kimmels of the world -- not to mention Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Maybe it's not that surprising that comedians -- not academics like Snyder -- are leading the fight against fascism.

Ouch. Have you reached out to Prof. Snyder to discuss this? He has the right to defend his decision.

Thank you Olivia. Just wonderful. I’m glad Steve called it out. Carr it’s clear Censorship. Barri Weiss behind it to.

Thank you Olivia for "telling it as it is" and not taking the easy, safe route. It is both helpful information and also another voice sending a message rather than playing it safe.

Excellent analysis of this topic. Thank you.

Again, thanks Olivia for excellent advice on resisting the regime.

Know what the most disturbing thing is?

It's not that this Colbert/Talarico thing happened. We expect terribleness from the Trump ecosphere and they never disappoint. Just another day ending in "y".

The worst thing is that 70-80M Americans, brainwashed by decades of dishonest, racist, misogynistic right wing media and loudmouths like Limbaugh, Rogan, Alex Jones, et al, who've never read a book in their lives are fine with it all. In fact they LOVE it and want more.

They have no clue how devastating this is to our very survival. They just know "LIBTARDS SUCK", and other low grade, knuckle dragging, anti intellectual garbage like that.

Fox News, take a bow. You too Bezos, Ellison, Thiel, Elmo and Bari Weiss.

We are in serious trouble as a country.

The whole stupid act made Colbert look good and I think gave Talarico a boost over Jasmine. If you can show me how it benefited Trump, the R in general or their chances of holding on to that Senate seat, please let me know. I'm inclined to view it as another episode in the Clown Show.

Punkette's avatar

Perhaps damaging Jasmine Crockett was the intent. Dumpty loathes her.

I don't think "they" are that subtle. They are responding. The amygdala is in charge, not the prefrontal cortex.

Thank you Olivia for making it clear about not obeying in advance! Now I get it. As always, enjoy your readings.
