Governor Andy Beshear has been sounding the alarm for awhile now. As Governor he has had 12 weather related disasters and credits FEMA and NOAA for saving many life's here in Kentucky. He is honest and gave credit to Trump and Noem for the response in the last round of flooding. But he is concerned about the path forward with all the Musk led gutting of resources.
They're all about cruelty. How are state and local officials supposed to deal with a disaster when they can barely fund day to day operations? NOAA is where these subscription weather apps get their information. I believe that this administration intends for people to die.
Between this, the anti-vaccine stance, measles, the lack of gun control, defunding Medicaid, going after social security and Medicare, making drugs more expensive, dying is exactly what this administration expects people to do.
You can deny climate issues all you want .. yet, when the storm comes, destroys everything in it’s wake you have nothing left but to lie about the event .. or remove the agency’’s that help, or the media that reports … the felon and his brigade of corrupt grifters want us to believe that “the climate” is just fine .. until the storm hits one of their properties. Perhaps the old adage is appropriate .. “will you lie to your mother” .. in todays world I think the answer is yes they DO!
The anti-left movement that has risen to power has climate change denialism as a core dogma. We see it playing out both domestically and on the world stage. It is likely to be the main driver in the fall of the American empire, assuming it is not stopped. The biggest question is how much of the rest of the world will be taken down too. And yes, what is not in question is that they will find a way to make it all Biden’s fault.
Obama and Biden passed many green initiatives the last 16 years and like 2% of American's took advantage of the solar and EV credits. American's are selfish and spoiled and the 2024 Trump election proved it. The majority have zero empathy or compassion toward others, let alone the larger environment and world or it's consequences. Just don't care, cruelty matters. I have had had solar panels and an EV for 7 years now and no one else has one for blocks around yet.
Thank you for drawing attention to the defunding of FEMA and NOAA. I was not aware that Arkansas was already refused federal disaster assistance. As always the “What You Can Do” recommendations are greatly appreciated.
100% correct. If there is for example a chlorine truck disaster in a state, FEMA would send a team of chlorine spill experts to the location. If FEMA is disbanded and funding goes directly to the states, then each state would then need to have a chlorine spill team of experts. And would need an anthrax team, a sarin gas team, etc. You just don't have that many experts around the country. So much for cost savings.
Thank you for the warnings, and you past and current efforts, Olivia. People really need to take those warnings to heart. As you mentioned, red states will certainly suffer more than blue states since most red states are in tornado alley, and subject to hurricane damage. Thankfully the European model is the best one to track hurricanes, but many will suffer great loss as they are unaware of what is coming at them. It's a little easier to get out of the way of hurricanes than tornado though.
Then there are the wildfires in red mountain states and floods in plains states, mostly dark red in color. All tr publicans know how to do is cut taxes and services. When those life saving, financial help services are needed, they will unavailable. And trump doesn't care about those people as the Arkansas and NC examples indicate. Let them fend for themselves says the mad, incompetent king as he waves around his twitcoins and NFTs for his cult to purchase.
It is truly amazing that so many people who will need the most help from agencies like FEMA vote for the man who has his sights set on killing it. It's self flagellation in real time. Sadly, dems are clueless, silent, and confused as usual. As they try to gain traction with esoteric policy proposals and squeamish attempts to look like bold actors for the people.
In the trump admin, no one will be there to offer you a hand after a disaster, unless you are a billionaire or have a multi million accumulation of worthless trump twitcoin.
“Worst of all, scientists would be ordered to present "neutral" data, which is code for minimizing or censoring the real risks of climate change. This is part of the broader strategy of denial that I've written about in more detail here.”
The fallacy of this view is that nature is not apolitical and bends decidedly towards the left (the cause and effect are backwards, but you get the point). Data is not and can never be neutral. It is what it is, and denying what it’s telling us is foolish.
Things are going local, fast. I'm a little surprised I'm not seeing this trend commented on more. Having well-funded federal programs like FEMA, NWS, and the Army Corps are absolutely the best way to go because of economies of scale and load-balancing. But that's being pushed back to the states by people who don't believe in it.
I like following the money, I learn so much when I do. Based on the behavior so far, it appears that the solid blue states (also the more prosperous, for some coincidental reason) will and are establishing a much greater priority on public safety, including disaster prevention and relief.
As we go into hurricane and tornado season, I'll be looking out for tearful Sally-Struthers-like appeal ads to help the poor residents of Arkansas who have been left homeless and devastated by wind and flood.
I was living in New Orleans during Katrina.Thank you Olivia for showing up for us. Thank you for bringing attention to this crisis Trump has created. Yes. It is deliberate and very cruel.
The work of FEMA, NOAA, and even NSF and NIH implement one on the five key functions of government in the Preamble to Constitution: provide for the general welfare. It’s cheaper to make disaster response and recovery assistance centralized at the federal level, or we will get duplicate efforts in about 22 states (the rest just won’t care). This is stupidity, plain and simple.
Hey GOP Congress, we’re watching and listening to what you do. We don’t see or hear anything. All that is unfolding with you silent makes you complicit. Lack of disaster preparedness and relief is just one area you will be blamed for. Incompetent liars heading National Security, is on you. Trade wars and empty shelves, on you. Abductions without due process, on you, destroying education, on you. Destroying the safety net, on you.
This is the culmination of 50 years of movement Conservatism led by the likes of Grover Norquist and the Heritage Foundation. Anyone who served in a Republican administration has had 50 years to denounce it and chose instead to be complicit in it to further their personal ambitions. You are very late to the party. This isn't Trumpism. It's Repuplicanism that up until J6 you had no issue with.
Yes -and- No. The GOP & all its enablers (including the Heritage Foundation) have been awful, corrupt, & racist for decades — however, Trump & Project 2025 are at a whole new level of malfeasance!

The expertise and infrastructure of FEMA and NOAA are irreplaceable. Ditto for HHS.
Trust me, when the storm comes and FEMA can’t respond, it’ll be Biden’s fault.
Yes, that we can count on I’m sure.
They're going to rename the San Andreas fault the Biden fault I am scared because they don't care if we die out here
Apparently they don’t believe in risk management/mitigation- we will all feel the dire consequences. Thanks for your voice.
They believe in survival of the fittest and raw capitalism. We are on our own.
Crony capitalism and survival of the wealthiest.

That was an important and well written article - Thanks !
